| Barbeque Chicken and Red Onion Pizza. |
[Nov. 8th, 2009|10:16 pm] |
This weekend saw my boyfriend and I in the kitchen, attempting to ambitiously make some thin crust pizzas.
With tips from Peter Reinhart's The Bread Baking's Apprentice, I'm pretty proud to say we did get our pizza crusts thin and crisp.

Or baked eggs, if you don't want to have a fancy name for this runny, creamy, absolutely delicious dish. It takes less than 15 minutes to whip this up (from start to finish!) and you must try this if you love eggs and want to jazz up breakfast or brunch (although to me, this is most definitely the quintessential lazy Sunday brunch) ( recipe and more photos here ) |

| Taste test |
[Nov. 8th, 2009|08:23 pm] |
We were fortunate enough to be included in the list for Our Awesome Planet's Ultimate Food Taste Test 3.0.
Avocado sansrival. Like Avocado ice-cream, with sansrival bits. Would be perfect ice-cold, I think. Maybe make it like an ice-cream cake?
This being our first taste test event, we didn't know what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised by mouth-watering concoctions, which included the following:
Callos. Various meatloafs. Cookie monster cheesecake. Avocado Sansrival. 3 kinds of lechon. Mangoes and cream cupcakes. Homemade jams (Strawberry mint, Mango ginger, etc.), Yummy flavored teas and jelly drinks from Kimco (guava tea and blackcurrant, among others). Chocolate-covered bacon. Bacon and potato chowder, clam chowder. Happy cream puffs. Chicago-style popcorn. There are other yummy food items that I wasn't able to taste since at the end we were too full to go on.

[Dec. 8th, 2009|03:44 pm] |
I bought these yummy pastries from a local store during the Chinese Mid-Autumn festival back in September and I am totally in love with these bunny shaped cakes.
 (Nippon Ya, Orchard Ion, Singapore)
The spongy chocolate filling in the center is absolutely delicious. It also comes in cheese, green tea and strawberry flavor (which I'm not really a fan of...). |

| Day 7 |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|11:44 pm] |
I got my mid-term grade back (I only had one). It was crappy because I waited until the last minute, but I think I can still manage an A in that class. I can't believe this semester is almost over. I saw this girl today that I knew a long time ago. We were never friends because my sister and her had problems. She kept on staring at me and trying to get my attention. I ignored her. There's no point in holding on to teen drama, for real. Anyway, all we did today was go out to eat and go to Target. I'm off to watch a movie with my bf.:)

| Pecan Pie Input Request |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|02:27 pm] |
Hi. It's my friend's birthday today, and we're having a small party tomorrow. She asked me to make her a pecan pie, and I've heard her and my dad say a good pecan pie should have a shortbread crust. I've looked at this thread: http://community.livejournal.com/bakebakebake/2450545.html and various tips throughout BakeBakeBake and I haven't seen any mention of a shortbread crust. Most just say 'one pre-made unbaked crust'. Is the shortbread crust just how people THINK it tastes, or is there a way to make a crust from crushed shortbread/ baked in place like how lemon-bars are? I'm a bit confused by this possibilit, but would like some input. It's my first time trying to make a pecan pie ^^; |

| soft molasses ginger cookies |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|02:38 pm] |
I just seem to be under a cloud of bad luck in the past week or so. I won’t waste time by divulging sad details, but the thought of Christmas being less than 8 weeks away has been a definite comfort, since it really is the most wonderful time of the year to me. Endless baking, being with my family, Bing Crosby on repeat… it’s just a happy time. And although I should be focused on Thanksgiving and that menu in the near future, I can’t get Christmas off my mind, or the classic flavor of gingerbread, which is so quintessentially Christmas to me. So I looked through my “To Cook” list I have posted on my fridge (it’s long, trust me) and saw these way down near the bottom. I love gingersnaps but most of the time end up playing with recipes to make them, well, less snappy. I’ve always been a fan of those “extra soft” versions of store-bought chocolate chip cookies (it’s practically like eating raw cookie dough, mm) so the idea of a soft ginger cookie piqued my interest quite a bit. Also because they have two very unconventional ingredients in them: molasses and Dijon mustard. I know, I know, most people are going to scrunch up their face and say “WHY?” but trust me when I tell you – it adds this smoky, mysterious flavor layer to the cookies that gives it an extra zing without tasting at all like actual mustard.
Tons more pics and info at my blog, jonesing for... ( Recipe and more pics under the cut! ) |

Here is how much of a dork I am:
Around 3pm I got a tweet from my favorite bar (what, you don't get tapping tweets? c'mon now. take your beer seriously.) saying that they had just tapped Founders Breakfast Stout
and I said "I WANT TO GO TO THERE."
So I changed my dinner plans and headed over and enjoyed two of the stouts, along with a beautiful white bratwurst on pretzel, liver dumpling soup, beer batter fries, and perogies.
The Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL. Amazing food and a tap list that will make you cry. |

Pepperoni, ham, beef, sausage, bacon, and pineapple. From Pizza Time in Hartford, CT.
I wanted a surprise extra topping, and once again, a roll of the die chooses pineapple. Some surprise. Still an excellent pizza. Pizza Time never disappoints me.

| October contest poll + November theme |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|08:26 pm] |
So apparently we're a solid week into November. Nobody told me. But a new month means a new theme, and once again we had a lot of people with the same suggestion - so we're doing it: CRANBERRIES! Fresh cranberries are amazing, but sweetened dried cranberries are acceptable too.
And, even more importantly, here's the contest poll for last month's theme. Voting will end either Sunday or Monday night, whenever I can get online, and the winner will receive a 2-month premium account! Here's a link to the community's paypal account if you would like to help support our bakers of epic win:
Poll #1482270 October Theme - Pumpkin
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 129Pick your favorite post!
EDIT: I didn't add the Pumpkin Chiffon Pie by rowangolightly to the poll. If you want to vote for it, please reply to this comment. I apologize for the fail. |

| My first OOTD! |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|07:50 pm] |
G'day fellow fats!
(OK, that was a corny greeting, but it felt right somehow).
So I've been watching/commenting on this comm for the past few days, and I have to say I think all of you have AMAZING fashion sense. Some of the combos you guys have put together... *is floored*
So, I thought I'd try and impart some of my own wisdom as a fellow plus-sized fashion tragic.
I got a bit annoyed with having nothing particularly inspirational in my wardrobe. I tend to avoid clothes shopping because I find it kind of a depressing task with my current financial situation and of course my size. but i thought "to hell with it" and headed to my local shopping centre. After getting thoroughly annoyed at the fact that those weird skirts that go in are the fashion right now (i don't get it. how do you walk in those things?), I went into Bhs and discovered, after some searching, the most awesome skirt i'd ever seen since the full-length green number from Katies some 5 years ago. The largest size was at least 2 sizes too small, but i bought it anyway thinking to myself "hell, i'll MAKE it fit".
I'm wearing it a bit higher than it's supposed to be worn. I think it's supposed to go just past the knee or something, but i kind of like it knee-length. Try to ignore the boring black top i've got on. it's the only thing i had at home that goes with it. I'm thinking I might look for a grey loosish singlet-type top. I think that, with a black wrap-around thing and maybe some nice black/grey beads, would work best with it. But anyway, tell me what y'all think.
( Skirtish yay. )

I'm getting a tattoo next Sunday, but I have had to switch my appointment on my artist about eight times. Normally I'm not so flaky, but two people have quit at work and I needed to pick up the hours since everyone else is still in training. Then I got sick, and had to do two rounds of antibiotics. Ugh.
I've been staying "in the rules" at the shop as far as switching the dates go, but I still feel terrible. I don't really have the extra money for a better tip, but would cookies for the shop be ok? Is this totally weird or would it be cool to be like, "I suck and I really appreciate you guys dealing with my crap because I know I've been a pain in the butt and I'm totes sorry." |

| GOP Men Behaving Badly in Congress: Silencing Women Lawmakers |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|01:03 pm] |
|
http://guerillawomentn.blogspot.com/2009/11/gop-men-behaving-badly-in-congress.html Gawd, you won't believe this video clip. Or maybe you will. All the A-holes are Republican men, aka boorish sexist pigs doing their sexist best to make the women shut up.
As the Democratic Women’s Caucus took to the microphone on the House floor to offer their arguments for how the bill would benefit women, House Republicans — led by Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) — repeatedly talked over, screamed, and shouted objections. “I object, I object, I object, I object, I object,” Price interjected as Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA) tried to hold the floor.

| ISO:Stretch studded belt |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|11:19 am] |
I have an obsession with wide stretch belts, and finding a studded one has been my new focus. I was wondering if any of you lovelies knew where I can get a belt similar to the ones pictured. It doesn't matter if its online or a physical store, I'm pretty desperate. My 1st choice would be black with silver studs, and 2nd being black on black, though I wouldn't mind other colors as well Thanks in advance!

| Boots: Help with Duo and Ankle Slouch |
[Nov. 7th, 2009|11:43 am] |
Hi fats -
So I know I'm not the only one lusting over Duo boots yet again this Fall/Winter season. I look at the website almost everyday and here I am ready to order some. I am thinking I want two pairs -
The Florence http://www.duoboots.com/products/boots/detail/calf_fitted_boots_timeless/florence/12/colour/1-black_leather/
and
The Venice http://www.duoboots.com/products/boots/detail/calf_fitted_boots_contemporary/venice/246/colour/4-black_suede/
Ok so now some questions: Does anyone have either of these? How are they? Are they true to size? How is the quality of the material? I love the way the Florence looks but then I watched the little video they have and they looked cheaper in the video than the photos. Ie - the leather looks a little bit chintzy. I saw one person with the Venice and purple and the pics were SO appreciated. They are on back order but I'm willing to wait.
The other question I have is why do boots slouch in the ankle? I know this slouchiness is a desired look for some boots this season but I seem to have this problem with all boots. I have the Brindisi from Duo http://www.duoboots.com/products/boots/detail/calf_fitted_boots_everyday/brindisi/7/colour/2-brown_nubuck/ and they slouched a lot last winter. I really despise this look and would like to avoid it. I also got another pair that year that are similar to the Malmo but not identical. I haven't been able to wear them more than once or twice because they completely suffocate my ankle. They, too, slouch a bit at the ankle and it digs in so deep and is so tight that I completely deformed looking ankles after wearing them. I thought maybe the ankle slouched because it was too big, but then I had an ankle that was too small and also slouched.
Thanks for any and all help!
Edit to include this photo of said slouchy ankles:

[Nov. 7th, 2009|11:48 am] |
Good morning! I'm still trying to get out of the habbit of just throwing a hoody and jeans on when it's my days off! This is what I wore yesterday. It was quite a challenge for me, the dress is short and I actually attempted to accessorise (I fell in love with this necklace the moment I saw it). What do you think? I felt pretty confident wearing it which was a suprise!
Sorry for the bad quality, i'm hoping to buy myself a nice little camera in the next few weeks. :)
