recipe request: Cornmeal biscottie [Nov. 29th, 2009|02:47 pm]

bakebakebake

[xtricks]
I have James McNair's corn cookbook and in the back it had a recipe for cornmeal biscotti. I still have the book but ... the last 10 pages are missing, including this recipe. I always make it for the holidays - and it works great as a wheat free cookie with little modification.

Does anyone have the cookbook and can transcribe the recipe for me?

Thanks!

I have been looking all over for an amazing layered cookie recipe that I found last Christmas. The cookies were chocolate, vanilla and cherry layered dough. The vanilla layer was mixed with nonpareils. I remember having to refrigerate the dough before slicing and baking them.

They tasted amazing and I would love to make them again this year.

Thank you for any help you can offer!

sweater leggings! [Nov. 29th, 2009|03:11 pm]

[I am: | bouncy]

hello my lovelies! i know many of us have been searching for something akin to cable-knit tights for the winter; i certainly have. i detailed my unfortunate experience with the one stop plus cable-knit tights in the 2009 tights roundup post, but i figured some good news deserves its own post.

faith 21 now has sweater leggings, still available up to 2X in black, brown and charcoal. I ordered two pair on a whim, even though so far faith 21 has run too small for me. well, i am here to tell you that these leggings run large and are an excellent substitute for cable-knit tights. they have a smooth sweater knit, but they are warm, stretchy, and incredibly comfortable, and not the tiniest bit itchy. I wear up to a 22 or 24 on the bottom and the 2X fits me perfectly, although i should mention that i'm an apple and that my legs are disproportionately small from the thighs down. that said, these leggings fit over my generous belly and butt and stay in place. the rise hits just above my belly button and is cut well enough that they don't sit lower in the back than the front.

all in all, i give these leggings an a+ and i highly recommend that anyone looking for warm winter leggings grab a pair of these before they're gone, as faith 21 tends to sell out preposterously fast.

ISO: High waisted elastic waist skirt [Nov. 29th, 2009|01:11 pm]

fatshionista

[winnieatepooh]
I'm coming to you glorious people for help.
I've been searching for quite some time for a high waisted black skirt that is:
1) somewhere between a swing skirt & a pencil skirt (I have a problem wearing skirts with a ton of volume as they tend to fly up and show all your goodies when it's windy! But also don't want something too form fitting.)
2) with a wide elastic waist band
3) and is kind of long

I love the tank dresses with the elastic waists and the swing-type skirts all attached (like THIS) but I'm having a hard time finding those in plus sizes (Alloy has a couple, so does Jens Fashion Plus, but nothing I'm in love with). SO I want to wear regular tanks & t-shirts tucked into the skirt.

Essentially what I'm looking for is THIS with an elastic waist & is longer. That skirt would be perfect, except that it is fairly short. I want something that will hit about knee length when worn high on the waist.

I've looked on ebay, torrid, etc etc etc pretty much everywhere. Maybe you guys know of a resource that I don't know of? Or maybe one of you can make one? Or know of someone on Etsy that has one? I am about a size 18 if that helps. Thanks guys, so much! And also for always inspiring me to not wear sweatpants every day :)

Advice? [Nov. 29th, 2009|01:20 pm]

tattoo_ink

[foolyfoley]
well thanks to the advice on my last post im deciding to hold off on the flower tattoo now im working on a couple of other ones which i will get when i finally get a job again and some money.
All i need is a little advice about placement mainly.

Some back story: ever since i can remember i have held my breath going through tunnels and making wishes (if your familiar with that game at all) i viewed and still do view wishing as a little ray of sunlight in my life. Things go to shit quite frequently but the fact that you have complete power over what you wish and nothing can limit that gives me hope and happiness. It sounds weird i know. Also the fact that its a private thing, i feel its the one limitless thing in my life under my power while still letting a little power go as if asking the universe to help you with what you need or want. giving in.

the Tattoo: I wanna get a tunnel (specifically the one iv been driving through basically everyday for most of my life) with the words make a wish going over the arch. but i need a little advice.
first- i cant decide if i should get it in the middle upper part of my back bellow my neck or on my upper outer thigh
second- i don't know if the lettering would look better as if it were graf on the arch of the tunnel (graffiti is also something im passionate about) or if it should be above the tunnel in some sort of cursivy fantasy type font.

Id love to hear any ideas and if you have a font id love to see it. thanks very much.

Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle Soup (Singapore) [Nov. 30th, 2009|03:24 am]

picturing_food

[vanessafrida]

I have heard people rave about how fantastic their prawn noodle is. Prawn Noodle has got to be one of my comfort food. It just brings back memories of sitting at my granny's place...slurping up a nice big bowl of noodles with all the yummy prawny broth...YUMMS!

The broth was very thick and dark. Obviously they have not stinged on making the broth flavourful.

The first spoonful of the prawn soup and I was smiling. It was full of "prawny" goodness. Def a flavourful stock.

The noodles was springy and cooked just al dente which is exactly how I like it. In essence I think I had three prawns, and they were all halved. I do wish they bothered to devine the prawns though, so I spent a bit of time picking at it.

Here comes Christmas! [Nov. 29th, 2009|06:13 pm]
mypapercranecom

The Christmas decorating has begun! We had friends and family over today and they helped us get all the boxes of Christmas goodness down from the attic. It was so quick with so many hands to help. We have begun the decorating but are waiting to get the tree until we get back from Boston.

We have some family coming to house sit for us but I didn’t want to leave them with a burden of a tree and one crazy cat. This is the first year we have had a cat with a tree and I am quite nervous about it. Biscuit is crazy, she climbs walls, chews cardboard like a dog might, and loves heights.

Any one have an experience or advice on that? We are going to keep all our glass ornaments off the tree this year just in case, but it still is a bit of worry. Otherwise I am so excited to get the house into Christmas shape…I have after all had Christmas music playing for weeks :)

Cheddar Dill Scones

I've always loved cheddar cheese and dill so when I chanced upon a recipe for cheddar dill scones, I just had to make them.

While these didn't come out as flaky as the ones pictured in the cookbook, I really enjoyed their buttery and deeply savoury flavour. I had two of these this afternoon, washed down with a cup of tea and will most definitely (and agreeably) have these for breakfast tomorrow.

Sunday Sweets: Fall Edition [Nov. 29th, 2009|02:30 pm]
cakewrecks
Before we head into December, the height of hectic holiday hoopla, let's take a moment to consider some of the prettiest Fall-themed cakes this side of candy cane lane.

First, a so-simple-it's-sweet gem:

(Made by Mike's Amazing Cakes. Of course.)

I think I kind of love those little egg birds.

Here's a neat idea; it reminds me of Mission-style stained glass:

(Found here. Baker unknown.)

Next is a more traditional, fondant-free style:

And now a similar design, done with fondant:

(Made by Melissa at Wild Cakes.)

You all know I'm a sucker for the cute, too, so here's a little "aww" factor:

(Made by Doodle Cakes.)

After our marathon of Wrecky turkey cakes, some of you asked if there were *any* good turkey cakes out there. So, we started looking. And the answer, pretty much, is no.

See, no matter how you slice it [smirk], turkeys are NOT attractive animals. So your best option is to make it cartoony and cute, like this one.

In fact, the best turkey cake I've seen this year was made by CW reader Belle, who isn't even a professional. She admits that the cookie "feathers" weren't quite what she wanted, but overall this guy is pretty darn adorable:

See? Great job, Belle!

UPDATE:
I just received another comically cute turkey cake from baker Ayse Yaman. Check it out:

I love the slightly demented look on his face. Makes you wonder what he's eating, huh? :) Thanks, Ayse - great job!

Brick walls. [Nov. 29th, 2009|04:27 am]

3 shots of Southern Comfort and now Land Shark lager.. Mmmm. My skin feels hot, twisting and rolling. It feels like my organs are wrapped in fur. The cold air outside and the cool brick walls never felt so amazing. It reminds me of the times I pushed myself away from those very same walls.. just to get closer to you.

I miss waking up with scratches on my knuckles. I didn't mind the broken nails. We fit like legos.

Writer's Block: Book worms unite!

What are the three best books you have ever read and what are the three worst? What made them so good or bad?

Submitted By [info]crazylove16

View 989 Answers

1. Anthropology of an American Girl-H. T. Hamann
This book is set in the '70s and follows the protagonist as she moves from high school to college. I love this book soo much that I named my kid after the main character.;)

2. The Time Traveler's Wife- Audrey Niffenegger
I'm sure you guys know what this book is about. I read it in one day and cried so much. I haven't seen the movie yet but I hope it lives up to the book.

3. Caramelo-Sandra Cisneros AND Atlas of the Human Heart-Ariel Gore
I know I'm supposed to list three books, but I can't choose between these two. I love the first one because it reminds me of Mexico and my child hood. The second one is just so real and beautiful.

1. Twilight (the whole series actually)- Stephenie Meyer
Ok, I know a lot of people love this series but I think it sucks. Once I begin reading a book I have to finish it. I stopped reading this after like the second chapter of the second book. I just couldn't do it.

2. Prep-Curtis Sittenfeld
This is the most depressing book ever. I thought the main character was so lame. I just did not enjoy it.

3. A Million Little Pieces-James Frey
Another book that was hella depressing. The ending sucked and I found the protagonist to be very annoying.

I LOVE to read and I love way too many books, so this was kind of hard.
I didn't go into much detail about these books because I kind of hate to find out the whole story before I even read it.
So, what are your three favorite and worst books?

Does anybody know of any GOOD used record stores in Nashville? By records I mean vinyl by the way, not cd's. Especially if they've got good 60's and 70's stuff and not just the usual boring yard sale Barbara Streisand fare.

Somebody mentioned McKays to me but if the nashville store is anything like the one in knoxville, I'd rather avoid it if possible. Bonus internet points if you know of any near donelson/hermitage but I'll drive a bit if necessary.

Fandom-Related Homemade Auction Raises Money For Cancer Patient [Nov. 28th, 2009|09:43 pm]

[gioiamia]
Greetings, all!

If you're doing Christmas shopping this weekend, please stop by the [info]supportstacie Homemade Auction Here! The auction benefits a fandom member, [info]truelovepooh, who is an uninsured cancer patient with Stage III Ovarian and Breast Cancer. You can read about her story HERE.

The auction is open until 6:00pm CST (-6 GMT) tomorrow. Items up for bid include LJ layouts and graphics, Christmas ornaments, decor, clothing and more! There is no minimum bid requirement for the auction items (with the exception of the Angel ornaments, which are being sold for a set price). This is a great opportunity to get gifts for fandom friends, as we guarantee internet anonymity for both the giver and recipient.

You have to register for the board in order to bid, but it's an easy process. The FAQ thread is Here if you have any questions.

There is also a discussion forum up where you can start your own threads for fandom or RL talk, or share your own cancer stories.

Thank you very much, [info]mistakenelegant, for allowing me to post this!

Please spread the word!

baked goods that ship well/Petit Fours [Nov. 28th, 2009|10:37 am]

BAKEBAKEBAKE,

This may be a shot in the dark, but I am wanting to send a few of my friends who live in different states/Canada something baked for christmas. I don't even know if this is possible, but I am open to any and every idea someone could give me. Even if the idea is just like: oh cookies ship well, that would be so super helpful because I am so confused as to what would ship well and have a possibility of arriving in one piece. If you have a favorite recipe or something that ships well, I'd appreciate that also.

Also, question number two, would Petit Fours ship well at all? I'm thinking not so much seeing as it is a cake and the time in the box would leave room for soggy cake upon arrival. Just wondering if anyone has ever shipped them with good results.

Thank you so much in advance, I appreciate it so much. I know I have a million requests, so thanks for reading!

p.s., dear mod, i'm sorry my tags probably aren't correct, I tried. <3

Hello! We bought our house about a year and a half ago. The bathrooms were the areas that were not remodeled. So, we were anxious to get to them! This is the smallest and one without a window. We wanted it warm and comfortable. We completely tore out the floor and drop ceiling as well as the vanity. We put in a new ceiling, tiled, new trim, vanity, lights and fan, among other things. Here are some of the photos from start to finish. Thanks for looking!

Does anyone know of a good, affordable ($20, $30 at most) place to get one's hair cut where they specialize in weird/ alternative/ asymmetrical cuts? It seems like every time I go to a professional stylist, my hair ends up looking not at all like what I wanted and/or really boring, I think because they're afraid to go too "wild" and that I'll regret it if I get the hair I actually want.
